A look at the political week that was…

  • Don’t tell Cornel West and Tavis Smiley but the White House is talking about poverty and policies to help low income families make ends meet.  See what they had to say in a post written by Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett here.
  • Massachusetts federal appeals court rules the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional in a move that sets up a final appeal to the Supreme Court for the first time since the state legalized same-sex marriage 9 years ago.
  • Also, in Massachusetts Democratic Governor Deval Patrick officially endorsed Elizabeth Warren for the U.S. Senate.
  • While you were busy talking about the face eating man in Florida this week, Congress was voting on abortion restrictions based on the mother seeking the abortion based on the sex or race of the child.  The real impact though would have been to restrict access for women of color while disguised as something else.  Thankfully the bill failed but it shouldn’t have even gotten this far in the first place.
  • Next week is the big recall election in Wisconsin where Democrats hope to oust the embattled anti-union Governor Republican Scott Walker.  Former President Bill Clinton is on his way there to campaign for Democratic challenger Tom Barrett and Mahlon Mitchell who is running for Lieutenant Governor.
  • All eyes should be on the important battleground state of Florida which is trying it’s very best to repeat the election fiasco of the year 2000.  With voter suppression laws which have been blocked by a federal judge and a purge of eligible voters that has been called out by the Department of Justice Florida is doing the most to screw everything up in 2012.
  • It’s sounds like Mitt Romney needs to brush up on his foreign policy because right now he sounds like a talking point machine that is making very little sense on what we should do in Syria.
