Former West Virginia State University President, Hazo Carter, has passed away at 67 years old. Carter served as the University’s ninth president from 1987 until 2012. Under his leadership, WVSU  was granted University status, regained land-grant status and began graduate programs in Biotechnology and Media Studies.

Philander Smith College President Johnny Moore has resigned after working in the position for less than two years. “While he is no longer president of Philander, Dr. Johnny Moore remains a valued alumnus and much-honored former athlete, with strong ties to our college,” said Board Chairman Artee Williams. Philander Smith named assistant education professor Lloyd E. Hervey as the interim president and will soon began a nationwide search for its 14th President.

Speaking of leadership, during Wilberforce University’s 158th Founder’s Day keynote address, given by House Minority Leader Tracy Maxwell Heard, trustee Wilma Mishoe was named the interim president. The search for a permanent replacement will still continue. (via WYSO)

Xavier University’s College of Pharmacy received a U.S. patent for new drug formulation aimed to help treat heroin and pain addiction. The College of Pharmacy has introduced a new formulation of buprenorphine, which treats opioid addiction and severe pain, but has the potential to become a dependency due to dosage frequency. In Xavier University’s new formulation the drug is to be taken every three to six month instead of daily, reducing the potential for abuse. 

Morris Brown College plans to sell most of its campus property after two failed partial property sales. Morris Brown filed for bankruptcy in August 2012, and lost its accreditation in 2002. The college has not yet released statements on how the property sale will affect current students and faculty, but Morris Brown President Stanley Pritchett said the sale is important for the college to gain the resources it needs to become accredited and get out of bankruptcy, according to WABE. An agreement with Clark Atlanta University might determine who the property is sold to. Clark Atlanta gave Morris Brown over 10 acres of land to be used for educational purposes only, or the land can be reclaimed. According to the bankruptcy court filings, Morris Brown will have to work closely with the University.

In sports news, Alabama State University Lady Hornets won the Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship, with the head coach Ritchie Bean named Coach of the Year. This was the fifth time in a row that ASU has won the title, and their ninth time winning the conference title via SWAC. Texas Southern University and Prairie View University came in second and third place, respectively.
