Southern University in Louisiana opened an international recruiting office in Kirikkale, Turkey this week, which officials from the university believe may be the first such office operated by an Historically Black College. The new venture is an expansion of the partnership between Turkey and the Louisiana state school; the university has partnered with six colleges in the country on exchange programs. Southern’s ultimate goal is to rebound its declining enrollment, which has dropped from around 9,500 students to 6,600 over the years. The office is set to up Southern’s enrollment by 100 Turkish students per year. “It’s very important for us to have that physical presence there,” Chancellor James Llorens told The Advocate. “It gives them and us an opportunity to have a constant resource there for students and faculty interested in coming here.” Via The Advocate
Last weekend marked the 40th Bayou Classic weekend, the celebration surrounding the historic football game between Southern and Grambling State University. The weekend was packed with events including the battle of the bands, a parade, a golf tournament, all of which led up t the game. The Southern Jaguars beat the Grambling Tigers 40-17.
