This week we caught up with Ami Vega, an NYC-based freelance nail artist to talk the summer nail trend, tie-dye.
The Trend: Nowadays, tie-dye print covers everything from clothing to cosmetics. Not sure about getting your groove back wearing the print from head-to-toe? Opt for a smaller canvas and consider yourself amazed at how easily tie-dye print translates on your nails.
Read on to learn more about this tie-dye manicure featuring swirls of neon color and the nail artist behind it.
EBONY: Ami, what inspired this design?
Ami Vega: The client (a graduating high schooler) wanted to stand out in her cap and gown with bright tie-dye inspired nails. I am obsessed with texture, so I thought we’d switch up the traditional tie-dye effect with this set of brush stroked colors.
EBONY: How was the design created?
AV: I used a variety of gel colors. With each polish, I [used] the brush out of the polish bottle and cleaned it (leaving it almost with no color) and brushed light strokes. Then, with fluid acrylic paint, I painted the thin lines seen at the bottom.
EBONY: How did you become a nail artist?
AV: I’ve been into nail art since the age of 13, but it didn’t become the real deal until 2011 when I launched my blog: www.elsalonsito.com. I have private clients and I work in an editorial and commercial setting as well.
EBONY: What do you feel is your artistic significance when it comes to nail art?
AV: I’m known for my super intricate details. People are still shocked when they find out I do lace nail art by hand!
EBONY: What’s one piece of advice you would give to aspiring nail artists?
AV: Practice really does make perfect. I reflect on what my work looked like 2-3 years ago and it’s amazing to see the growth. Don’t ever stop practicing your craft.
