Victoria Ford, turning down UGK and Outkast blasting in the background, comments, “I started shooting in 2007. I didn’t take it seriously until 2011.”
Self-taught, Ford’s work is published in the book Mfon: Women Photographers of the African Diaspora and most recently, God Save The Queens: The Essential History of Women in Hip-Hop.
Last March, Ford had an art opening in Washington, DC. The same evening, she was assigned to shoot diamond-level artist Lauryn Hill (pictured), headlining DJ Beverly Bond’s Black Girls Rock Festival. “I had to run to get there in time.” Arriving she remembers, “The lighting was incredible.”
Ford’s live performance images of artists such as Erykah Badu, Pharrell Williams, Tyler the Creator and Alice Smith indicate a relationship with motion and divine timing. She notes, “As a music photographer, the artists who resonate with me are the ones that I can personally connect with aurally as well as visually.”
