EBONY Power Talks: Influential Creators
EBONY Power Talks: Influential Creators features CEO, author and fashion designer Nichole Lynel in conversation with actor and model, Broderick Hunter. The discussion kicks off with a viewing of the P&G “Widen the Screen” campaign, aimed at broadening the perspective and stories of Black people in the media. Our creators reflect on the importance of connecting to these untold stories that encompass the full Black experience. “It really comes down to why these stories are being told like this…the inauthentic stories come from not widening those conversations to tell other versions,” Hunter comments on the current approaches to Black representation in the media.
As we begin to see more Black creators and storytellers claiming their seats at the table, we can begin to explore a richer and more dynamic scope of Black culture. This in turn yields great power for our communities – from creators getting to the bag and being paid their worth for their craft, to building legacies that create more opportunities for the next generation. “Growing up when I thought of a business owner or certain jobs, I didn’t see us,” Lynel said reminiscing on her childhood. But today, the impact of on-screen franchises such as Marvel’s Black Panther have ignited a newfound passion. “I know when I have watched certain films what it’s done for me, it’s made me dream bigger and better.”
Hunter and Lynel round out the conversation by sharing how they stay true to their intentions while navigating the privilege and honor that comes with being influential Black creators.
