EBONY’s mission of fostering community among Black audiences globally and celebrating the growing connection between residents of Africa with its descendants throughout the diaspora continues with this month’s editorial theme of Home & Abroad .

Our month-long exploration of fellowship, creative expression, and sanctuary through the lens of “home,” kicks off with our April 2023 cover star Jodie Turner-Smith. The fashionista embodies what it means to be a queen as she continues to dominate the industry and slay the red carpet with an onslaught of head-turning looks. The British-born stunner first caught our eyes with her stellar performance in Melina Matsoukas and Lena Waithe’s Queen and Slim. Since then, she has had a string of standout roles in television shows and films including White Noise, Without Remorse and 2021’s Anne Boleyn—where she became the first Black actress to play the Tudor queen.

Though she was born in the UK, the it-girl’s Jamaican parents raised her in a strong Caribbean household, keeping her connected to her island roots. For her EBONY cover shoot, the star returned to the tropical paradise, where she played double duty as cover model—and multitasking mama—with her infant daughter in tow. Fresh-faced and wearing looks by Latina-owned swimwear brand Gonza, Haitian-American photographer Lougè Delcy captured the fashionista in varying modes of escape at GeeJam Hotel in Port Antonio. In her exclusive interview with writer Jihan Forbes, the actress reflects on motherhood, her island roots, and her excitement around playing mas (being in the parade) at Jamaica Carnival with EBONY later this month.

Check out our cover story, behind-the-scenes videos, and exclusive content around Turner-Smith’s forthcoming film.
