In the words of the Notorious B.I.G., they "never thought that hip-hop would take it this far." Birthed in the rec room of a Bronx apartment complex at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, the most influential art form of its generation has officially turned fifty.

Like most cultural phenomena, hip-hop was birthed out of disruption. Providing a way for marginalized communities to express themselves and share their stories, it has since grown into a global movement that has touched the lives of millions of people around the world.

To celebrate, we’ve teamed up with entertainment company Mass Appeal for a history-making collaboration that honors five-decades of creative excellence. Through moving stories penned by leading voices, including former Vibe editor Emil Wilbekin and award-winning writer Kevin Powell, we're highlighting the moments that made history.

We’re also bringing some of the culture’s leading disruptors to the fore and giving them their flowers. In a whirlwind three-city cover shoot, we bring you 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, Lil Kim, Rick Ross and Swizz Beatz.

Masters of wordplay, they use their lyrics to tell stories, express their emotions, and challenge the status quo. Their impact can also be seen across multiple industries, from fashion to film.

We are excited to see what the next 50 years of hip-hop hold. I know this genre will continue to evolve and grow, and I can't wait to see what new and exciting things artists will create.

Now and always, all hail hip-hop.

Sincerely,
Marielle Bobo
