Apple TV+'s newest historical drama Emancipation follows the journey of an enslaved Black man as he treks to freedom. Will Smith stars in the film as Peter, a father and husband who strives to hold onto his family with love and dignity in the 19th century American South. Through treacherous swamps and dangerous bounty hunters, Peter endures harsh circumstances to secure a life devoid of slavery.

EBONY correspondent Danielle Young chatted with the cast and crew of the film about the meaning of liberation and the significance of sharing untold truths about our country.

"I think the idea of personal and psychological emancipation is probably as equally critical, if not more critical, than external emancipation. That's one of the things that was so great about Peter—he was free in his mind. Peter's body was enslaved but his mind never was," shared Smith as he reflected on his character.
