Yaya DaCosta recently sat down with EBONY to discuss her role in the upcoming drama Bolden, about the nearly unknown cornetist and bandleader Buddy Bolden who is credited with inventing jazz music. In the film, DaCosta portrays the jazz pioneer’s wife, Nora. Although Bolden is not a household name, it was one the model/actress had an interest in. “I love grew up loving jazz,” she said. “I mentioned the audition to my mom, and my parents had actually heard of Bolden before and they were excited to learn more about this story.” Based on her role, the Harlem, New York native also spoke about the “strength” it takes to be married to a famous man who is also a womanizer. “That’s a type of strength that I didn’t realize for a longtime In this usage, it’s two words. was a strength,” DaCosta said. “I thought it was a weakness. The level of tolerance for his philandering, late nights and flings with fans–what we call in the modern day as groupies –Yaya wouldn’t have stood for that.” She said that when she was younger she "judged" people for infidelity. Playing a wife in the early 1900s where being a single woman was frowned upon showed the emotional strength it took to be a part of a societal “custom." Marital issues aside, DaCosta believes it is vital to promote the story of the jazz genius and the beginnings of the African-American art form. Bolden opens in theaters on May 3.
