In his return to the big screen, Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins takes on a film adaptation of If Beale Street Could Talk, a critically acclaimed James Baldwin novel published in 1974.

The movie stars Kiki Layne and Stephan James as Clementine “Tish” Rivers and Alonzo “Fonny” Hunt, a couple torn apart when Fonny is falsely accused of rape. While he is in prison Tish discovers she is pregnant and with the help of a lawyer and her family tries to find evidence to exonerate Fonny.

The supporting cast includes Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry, Mad Men’s Teyonah Parris and 7 Second‘s Regina King.

Jenkins will also be reuniting with several of the Oscar-nominated talents, who worked on Moonlight including cinematographer James Laxton, composer Nicholas Britell and editors Joi McMillon and Nat Sanders.

If Beale Street Could Talk will open in theaters this fall. Watch the trailer, which released on Aug. 2, the 94th anniversary of Baldwin’s birth.
