As you may or may not know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  According to the Center for Disease Control, an estimated 40,000 women die from breast cancer each year, and black women are more likely to die of the disease than any other demographic group.

There are plenty of depressing statistics that we could list, but instead we’d like to take a moment to celebrate those who fought breast cancer and won.  Here’s a list of five black celebrities who can count themselves among the 12 million or so breast cancer survivors in America today.  Some of them might surprise you!
