It is estimated that one in five adults with HIV are not aware that they have the sexually transmitted disease. In an effort to promote early detection and awareness, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has set up a pilot program in seven participating pharmacies to give customer testing. Announced this week, the tests are in Walgreens in Chicago, Washington D.C., and Lithonia, Ga. They are hoping that by the end of the summer 17 more pharmacies will take on the testing.

“We want to get a sense of how cumbersome this process would be and the approximate cost of the service for the pharmacies,” Kevin Fenton, a CDC director for the center focusing on HIV/AIDS, told the Wall Street Journal. If the findings show a positive response, they hope to replicate an established model for other pharmacies nationwide.
