In honor of International Women’s month, Ancestry.com is featuring stories of inspiration for International Women’s Day, which is Wednesday March 8.

It’s no secret that our ancestors crossed oceans and settled in various continents, fought for women’s rights and overcame obstacles that were not faced by our male counterparts.

In recognition of the long list of achievements for women, and as part of Ancestry.com’s involvement in the #PressforProgress  movement, the website is sharing stories of “female giants in our pasts whose efforts and determination can help inspire and guide us today.”

In a press release sent to EBONY, Ancestry.com highlighted stories from big name celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey and Tracee Ellis Ross, and their inspiring stories.

“Oprah Winfrey’s grandmother, Hattie Mae Presley Lee, has inspired a nation to harness the power of reading. By age 3, she taught Oprah to read, and since then, Oprah began dreaming about the how the world could be changed. In addition to becoming a global entertainment icon, Oprah has inspired millions to celebrate and love reading through “Oprah’s Book Club” and the creation of Oprah’s Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.”

The release also highlighted discoveries about the family of  Tracee Ellis Ross.

“During World War II, Tracee Ellis Ross’s grandmother, Charlotte Lasky, bravely took on the high stress job of crystal inspector, which controlled the radio frequency to transmit and receive important messages for the troops. Just as Charlotte represented women’s strength during the Rosie the Riveter movement, Tracee has followed in the footsteps of her grandmother, becoming a founding member of Time’s Up and an advocate for women.”
