A White property manager at an apartment complex in Memphis, Tennessee lost her job after she called the cops on a Black man wearing socks in a swimming pool on the Fourth of July, The New York Times reports.

Kevin Yates was at the pool at Riverset Apartments with his girlfriend, Camry Porter, and her two godsons when he approached by Erica Walker about him wearing socks while his feet were in the swimming pool.

Yates and Porter said that Walker told them that he was not wearing
proper pool attire” and when he refused to remove his socks, she called the police.

Porter posted a video of a conversation she had with Walker and a police officer on her Facebook page.

Porter told the Times on Sunday that she felt she and Yates were targeted because of their race and that they were the only Black people in the pool, and that there were White people who were wearing clothes in the pool.

“It’s not the issue with socks,” she said. “If socks were not to be worn, that was very well fine. The issue was we were the only one addressed.”

Trilogy Residential Management that runs Riverset Apartments released a statement condemning Walker’s actions and confirmed that she was fired.

“Ms. Walker was terminated immediately after we completed our investigation yesterday afternoon,” the company said in a statement. “She will never be employed by Trilogy Residential Management, LLC or any of its properties in the future.”
