Today is day 4 of the national month-long writing campaign for men on the issue of domestic violence and in support of Marissa Alexander, the Florida mother of three who was sentenced to 20 years for firing a warning shot to scare off her abusive husband. Launched by the Chicago Taskforce on Violence Against Girls & WomenEmotional Justice Unplugged, and the Free Marisa Now Mobilization Campaign, EBONY.com is the official media partner of this critical act of 'emotional justice' in action.

Check out our mission statement here and visit EBONY.com daily through the month of October to read powerful words from men who are committed to seeing justice for Marissa Alexander.

Today's letter is from Marlon Peterson, a brother who spent his twenties in prison and fighting for his freedom. Now, he joins other brothers to connect, engage and challenge other men around the injustice of domestic violence.

Marlon speaks of the toll that injustice can take on a psyche, the battle to retain your sense of self from behind bars, the pain and the paralysis, the solitude and the community. He says that he stands up and offers the support of the network that fought for his freedom to Marissa Alexander, as the fight for hers continues.

"Hi Marissa" from Marlon Peterson

"…I am happy to hear about the news about your receiving a new trial. I imagine your children are excited that their mommy might be coming home...Marissa, sis, I come from that place of incarceration, spending 10 years, two months, and seven days of my life there. I spent my entire 20's in cages of insanity. I battled and battled and battled everyday against to maintain my sense of esteem and sanity. And, I won. Winning is possible."

"…(In my case) we won as a community. And just like that community that helped me win I am sharing that same community of comrades that will fight with you. We will sustain and provide comfort for you. We believe in you and applaud your regal strength. We are here for you and your children. Marissa, we are our sister's keeper, and I am thankful to share the everyday victories of sanity that we will sustain together."
