The husband of lifestyle guru B. Smith is responding to criticism after he revealed that he’s in a relationship with another woman as he cares for his wife who has Alzheimer’s disease.

Dan Gasby, 64, has been married to Smith for 26 years, but in December he went public with his relationship with Alex Lerner, 53, a woman he met in 2017.

“If This is Us and Modern Family came together, it would be us,” Gasby told The Washington Post on Monday, which highlighted the unique situation.

Smith was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s six years ago, a disease that upended her life. Her restaurants closed down and her public appearances ground to a halt, according to the Post.

Gasby said that he met Lerner at a bar and that the two started out as friends. Lerner told the Post that she “didn’t want to go out with a married man,” but realized that the situation was not of a “man cheating on his wife.” She added: "What I admire about him is that he takes care of her.”

Lerner helps take care of Smith and has room in the restaurateur’s home with Gasby. “If I can be compassionate to her … if I can do anything for her, it makes me feel good,” she told the Post. “If it is giving her something to drink, or making her something to eat—she loves to eat—I feel good.”

Social media users criticized Gasby for his year and a half relationship with a woman who's not his wife, with some calling him “shameful,” PEOPLE reported.

“I love my wife but I can’t let her take away my life!” he said.
