#ChangeFest, otherwise known as the Social Change Film Festival, will kick off in Chicago on Friday, Oct. 13. The event, now in its sixth year, was founded to leverage Chicago’s “rich history of film, activism and philanthropy to shine a bright light on, and do something about critical, global issues.”
Festival organizers will also host screenings in Los Angeles and New York, according to Eventbrite.
Chicago’s Harold Washington Cultural Center will serve as an official sponsor of #ChangeFest, with screenings taking place at the venue over the weekend.
“That commitment to honestly depicting significant issues and addressing them honors the life and legacy of the great Chicago mayor Harold Washington,” the announcement continued. “That’s also why the Harold Washington Cultural Center is making free tickets available to opening night for changemakers like you and the people, organizations and communities you serve.”
This weekend’s festival will give viewers the chance to witness 29 inspiring and life-changing films from all over the world. Below are a few:
- Tanya, described as an eye-opening film about sex-trafficking, fatherhood, and adoption, will screen on opening night. It is first-time filmmaker Monica Raymund’s work. She stars as Gabriela Dawson in the NBC drama Chicago Fire.
- America; I Too is described as a riveting film about exercising your rights as a U.S. citizen when confronted by police. Academy Award-nominated actor Barkhad Adbi stars.
- Slope of the Curve is described as “a mind-blowing film about the future of labor in the world” and features Anthony Anderson from ABC’s black-ish.
