Bobby Brown on Whitney Houston: I Don’t Think She Died From a Drug Overdose

Bobby Brown is being as candid as ever in a new interview, where he shares that the 2012 death of ex-wife, Whitney Houston, may not have been drug related.

The New Edition singer revealed to Rolling Stone that the powerhouse vocalist was adamant about leading a sober lifestyle before her passing, leading him to believe drugs may not have been the only or main factor.

When asked what’s the most misunderstood thing about the “Heartbreak Hotel” singer, Brown took his time and then responded, “I don’t think she died from drugs.”

He went on, “She was really working hard on herself to try to be a sober person and, um [pauses] she was a great woman.”

Brown’s current wife and manager, Alicia Etheredge-Brown, interjected, saying it was confirmed that drugs were found in Houston’s system, to which the “Don’t Be Cruel” singer responded, “Well, I don’t think so.”

The R&B star then says he believes the main cause of Houston’s passing was emotional pain that manifested itself into health problems.

Check out the exchange below.

This month marks the sixth anniversary of Whitney’s death. What do you think was the most misunderstood thing about her?
Um … whoa [long pause] – I don’t think she died from drugs.

You don’t?
No, not at all.

What do you think it was?
She was really working hard on herself to try to be a sober person and, um [pauses] she was a great woman.

When you say you don’t think she died of drugs, do you mean you don’t think there were drugs in her system at the time?
Yes.

[Alicia Etheredge-Brown, wife and manager, interjecting]: There were drugs in her system.
Well, I don’t think so.

[Etheredge-Brown]: You feel that other things played a part …
That played a part. Yes.

What do you attribute her death to if it wasn’t drugs?
Just being broken-hearted.

Houston was found dead Feb. 11th 2012 in Beverly Hills, face down in a water-filled bathtub.  Read the full Rolling Stone interview here.
